Wine neophytes touring wine country have a new weapon: the personal sommelier. Growing number of tourists visiting Italy, France, Greece, Spain or other vineyard heavy nations are hiring professional stewards to take the guesswork out of ordering wine with their meals. As tourists see an ever more authentic and intimate travel experience, they are increasingly shunning hotels in favor of private vacation villas. Along with the villa, visitors rent not only a chef, but also a sommelier who pours a different wine for each course. It gives travelers the advantage of having a formal wine tour without having to work to hard at it, says Alfredo Merat, owner of the Sag Harbor, New York based rental brokerage Overseas Connections. Prices range from $50 to $100 per hour - Echezeaux not included. |
